DAILY HOUSEHOLD FRUSTRATIONS

Signs Your Home Needs Better Water

Mineral-heavy water leaves quiet clues around every sink, shower, and appliance. Spotting these early prevents costly replacements and everyday discomfort.

Scale & Fixture Buildup

Chalky white residue dims chrome faucets, clogs aerators, and leaves stubborn rings on glass doors despite frequent scrubbing.

Dry, Irritated Skin & Hair

Harsh minerals strip natural moisture during showers, leaving skin feeling tight or itchy and hair noticeably brittle and unmanageable.

Premature Appliance Wear

Hidden calcium deposits collect in water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines, reducing heating efficiency and shortening lifespans.

START WITH YOUR WATER SOURCE

Do You Have City Water or Well Water?

City water and private well water create different problems. Choose your water source to see the concerns, treatment approach, and installed package that best fits your home.

MUNICIPAL UTILITY SUPPLY

City Water Systems

Municipal plants treat water for biological safety, but chemical disinfectants, chloramines, and residual mineral hardness linger in home plumbing lines.

  • Harsh chlorine taste and persistent chemical odors in drinking water
  • Dry, irritated skin and brittle hair after daily showers
  • Stubborn soap scum on shower glass and spotty silverware
  • Mineral scale build-up gradually choking water heater efficiency

PRIVATE WELL GROUNDWATER

Well Water Systems

Private wells draw raw groundwater containing heavy calcium minerals, dissolved ferrous iron, sulfur odors, and sediment requiring robust multi-stage treatment.

  • Reddish-orange rust staining in sinks, toilets, and laundry loads
  • Excessive grains of mineral hardness crusting fixtures and pipes
  • Metallic taste or rotten-egg sulfur odor from private aquifers
  • Aging legacy softeners wasting hundreds of pounds of salt yearly

EVERYDAY COMFORT & HOME PROTECTION

The Tangible Benefits of Soft Water

The Benefits You Notice Every Day

Softened water makes everyday routines more comfortable while helping reduce damaging hard-water scale throughout your home.

NATURAL REJUVENATION

Silkier Hair & Hydrated Skin Every Morning

Hard-water minerals can leave behind residue on your skin and hair. Softened water helps soaps and shampoos lather and rinse more effectively, leaving you feeling cleaner and more comfortable after every shower.

  • Leaves skin feeling softer and more naturally moisturized, with less hard-water residue

  • Helps hair feel softer and more manageable by reducing mineral buildup

  • Creates richer soap and shampoo lather while significantly reducing soap film

TRANSPARENT ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about system sizing, installation, maintenance, and what to expect before choosing the right water solution for your home.

How do you determine the correct equipment size for my home?

We size your water-treatment equipment based on your water test results, household water use, and the flow needed when several fixtures run at once.

For both city and well water, we begin with a free on-site water test and installation assessment. We review hardness, household size, plumbing, and any existing treatment equipment.

For well water, concerns such as iron, sediment, or odors may require additional testing or separate treatment. For city water, our softener installations include a separate carbon pre-filter for free chlorine reduction.

Scott will explain the recommended equipment and provide a written quote before you decide.

What is involved in a standard installation and how long does it take?

A standard installation typically takes 2 to 4 hours. Our certified technicians tie directly into your main water line, install bypass valves for easy serviceability, route drain lines according to local code, and connect the system to a standard 120V outlet. We test water hardness before leaving to verify immediate performance.

What are the ongoing maintenance requirements?

For the Softener, maintenance is minimal and straightforward. Most residential households simply add 1 to 2 bags of "95%-99.9% Pure" Water Softener Salt (or Potassium Chloride as a sodium-free alternative) to the brine tank every 6 to 8 weeks.

For the City Water systems with the Carbon Filter (installed ahead of the Softener), replace the Carbon Filter Cartridge every 6 to 12 months, depending on water usage.

For the Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems, replace the pre and post filters every 6 to 12 months, and the RO Membrane every 3 to 5 years.

Where is the system typically installed in the house?

Systems are usually placed near the main water shut-off valve, typically located in a basement, utility room, or garage. We require roughly 3 to 4 square feet of floor space near a floor drain or utility sink and access to a standard electrical outlet.

Will a water softener restrict my household water pressure?

No. By properly matching the internal valve porting (1-inch high-flow standard) to your home's plumbing diameter, our systems maintain robust water volume even when multiple showers, appliances, and outdoor fixtures operate at the same time.

Why choose Soft Water Systems and the Trusco brand of equipment?

Soft Water Systems is the premier choice for whole-house water treatment in West Michigan because we pair a family-owned, low-overhead sales model with Trusco, a legendary local brand built right here in Grand Rapids since 1956. We bypass fancy bells and whistles to deliver a proven, American-made workhorse engineered for maximum durability and reliability. Trusco systems are so dependable that they are trusted in both residential homes and high-stakes commercial environments, protecting industrial car wash pumps and valves valued at over $100K. By sharing Trusco's philosophy of offering top-quality equipment at a fair price, Soft Water Systems brings unbeatable commercial-grade value directly to your household, saving you money while ensuring many years of worry-free service.

Why does softened water feel different on my skin?

Soft water allows your soap to rinse off completely, leaving behind nothing but your skin's natural oils. While hard water leaves behind a drying mineral residue, soft water gives you a deep, clean rinse.

Here is exactly why you feel that silky smoothness:

• No soap scum residue: Hard water minerals bond with soap to create a film on your skin that traps dead skin cells and clogs pores. Soft water eliminates these minerals so soap washes away completely.

• Natural moisture stays intact: The slippery feel is actually your skin’s natural oils and hydration, no longer blocked or dried out by harsh mineral buildup.

• Better lather, less product: Just like soft water prevents spots on your glassware, it allows soaps to lather beautifully. You will only need to use half as much soap to get perfectly clean.

• True cleanliness: That "squeaky-clean" feeling from hard water is actually friction from mineral residue. The silky smoothness of soft water is how clean skin is truly supposed to feel.

Do I need a water treatment system if I have city water?

Yes, because city water treatment plants only disinfect your water; they do not remove the harsh minerals that damage your home. While municipalities use chlorine to kill bacteria and ensure water is safe to drink, they rarely soften the water. Any softening they do perform usually only meets the bare legal minimums, which leaves your home vulnerable to hard water damage.

Here is how a home system completes the job the city starts:

• Removes hard water minerals: City treatment plants do not filter out calcium and magnesium. A home system eliminates these minerals to prevent scale buildup in your plumbing, water heater, and appliances.

• Eliminates chlorine taste and odor: Municipalities rely heavily on chlorine to disinfect water. Our refining systems strip away that chemical taste and smell so your drinking water is clean, fresh, and appetizing.

• Filters out leftover sediment: Water travels through miles of aging city water mains before reaching your tap. A dedicated home system catches any micro-sediments or rust picked up along the way.

• Saves you money: By removing both hardness and chlorine, you protect your plumbing from corrosion, extend the lifespan of your appliances, and cut your soap and detergent usage in half.

How do you treat my well water?

We start with a free on-site water test and installation assessment. We review your water conditions, household usage, existing equipment, and the concerns you want to address.

A water softener treats hardness caused by calcium and magnesium. Depending on your test results, iron, sediment, or rotten-egg odors may require additional treatment. A softener alone is not the solution to every well-water problem.

Our well-water softener offer is $1,999 with standard installation, plus sales tax. Any additional treatment or installation work will be identified in your written quote before you decide.

Scott will explain your options and answer your questions, with no obligation or pressure to buy.

What if my well-water test shows that additional treatment is needed?

Private well water can contain varying levels of hardness, iron, sediment, sulfur, and other concerns. If testing identifies treatment needs beyond the listed package, we’ll explain the results and provide a separate written quote before any equipment is ordered or work begins.

What are "forever chemicals" and how do they affect my well water?

PFAS are a large group of synthetic chemicals often called “forever chemicals” because many break down very slowly in the environment. They can occur in private wells and municipal drinking water, but their presence in your home’s water must be determined through testing.

Our free on-site water test does not establish whether PFAS are present. PFAS testing requires specialized laboratory analysis; your local health department can help you identify appropriate testing resources.

A standard water softener is designed to treat hardness, not PFAS. Certain activated-carbon filters and reverse osmosis systems can reduce specific PFAS. Performance depends on the exact equipment, its verified reduction claims, water conditions, and proper maintenance.

If PFAS are a concern, we’ll discuss the need for laboratory testing and verify the specific equipment’s capabilities before recommending treatment.

What is Reverse Osmosis (RO), and how does it work?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a drinking-water treatment process that uses water pressure to move water through a semi-permeable membrane, reducing dissolved substances. It serves a different purpose from a water softener, which treats hardness caused by calcium and magnesium.

Our five-stage under-sink RO system combines pre-filtration, an RO membrane, and final filtration. Treated water is supplied through a dedicated drinking-water faucet at your kitchen sink.

The pre-filters help protect the membrane, while final filtration helps improve taste. The system also produces a reject-water stream that carries concentrated dissolved substances to the drain.

The substances reduced and the level of reduction depend on the specific model, incoming water conditions, and proper maintenance. We verify the equipment’s documented capabilities before recommending it for a particular water-quality concern.

Scott will explain installation requirements, filter replacement, and maintenance so you know what to expect before purchasing.

Will there be a long or high-pressure sales pitch when you visit my home to take a water sample?

No. Our visit begins with a free on-site water test and installation assessment for either city or well water.

Scott will discuss your concerns, check the installation location, and explain the treatment options suited to your home. Some well-water concerns may require additional testing before we recommend equipment.

You’ll receive a written quote identifying the recommended equipment and any additional treatment or installation work before you decide. There is no obligation to buy, and you can take time to review your options.
